Holy Week Begins with Palm Sunday

The week leading up to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, called Holy Week, begins with Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday is the day Jesus was welcomed into the city of Jerusalem by people waving palms and exclaiming “Hosanna!”

Maundy Thursday
March 28
Maundy Thursday commemorates the day Jesus provided a new commandment during the Last Supper with his disciples. This Seder meal was part of the Jewish Passover, and we participate in a similar meal and worship to remember Jesus’ commandment to us.

About the Prayer Vigil
March 28-29
Every year, we are provided the opportunity to pray together as we remember the sufferings Christ endured for the sins of the world. At Christ Providence, we will have volunteers pray in 1-hour shifts using prayers submitted by fellow members of the congregation. The Vigil begins on Thursday, March 28 at 8 p.m. and ends on Good Friday at 7 p.m. before the start of our Tenebrae service. Get involved by submitting a prayer request online or by signing up for a 1-hour timeslot. The signup board is located in the Lower Commons.

A service of Tenebrae includes meditation and reflection as well as reading scripture interspersed with music, for reflection about what Christ has done for us. With each reading and hymn selection a candle will be extinguished, until the service ends in darkness and silence.
