Practicing Obedience

Practicing Obedience

Annabelle Laine, guest blogger - February 3, 2025

Over the past year, I have been blessed to receive several messages from God. Initially, I would simply write the essence of what He was speaking to me in the notes app on my phone. However, two weeks ago, I felt a distinct calling to do more—to share His words with others in a more intentional way. It is with this sense of purpose that I present this devotional, trusting that it may speak to you as profoundly as it has to me.

Heart Posture: A Devotional

What Does It Mean and Where Does It Come From?
The true meaning of ‘heart posture’ is the condition and position of our hearts and how they respond to God. It’s not just about our emotions or feelings but about our willingness to align our hearts with His. In our daily lives, we might hear phrases like, “I don’t listen to worship music if I don’t have the heart posture to worship” or “I’m taking a break from going to church right now; I just don’t have the right heart posture.” But what does that truly mean in light of Scripture?

Scriptural Foundations
Matthew 6:21 says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Our heart posture reflects what we truly value. If we treasure the things of this world more than God, our hearts will be distant from Him. But if we treasure His presence, our hearts will be drawn closer to Him.

Proverbs 4:23 reminds us, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” A heart surrendered to God overflows with life, wisdom, and purpose. It influences our thoughts, actions, and the way we interact with others.

Obedience and the Posture of Our Hearts
God has shown me that a good heart posture comes from obedience. Trust me, I know that practicing obedience is much easier said than done. It’s hard to know what we’re meant to obey, especially when life feels uncertain. When I struggle to discern His voice, I remember the phrase, “…pulling on my heart strings.”

This phrase takes on new meaning in the context of our faith. That deep, stirring feeling in our hearts—the conviction, the gentle nudge, the sense of urgency to act—these are often God’s ways of getting our attention. Did you know that anatomically, our hearts contain actual heartstrings called chordae tendineae? These strings help regulate blood flow by shifting the heart’s posture. In the same way, when God pulls on our spiritual heart strings, He is adjusting the posture of our hearts, aligning them with His will.

Responding to God’s Call
I often feel a tug on my heartstrings when praying, worshiping, or even in unexpected moments throughout the day. These tugs prompt me to seek God, to listen, and to respond in obedience. Ignoring these tugs can cause a hardening of the heart, while embracing them leads to transformation.

The Bible is full of examples of obedience shaping a person’s destiny. Jonah resisted God’s tug at first, but his eventual obedience led to revival in Nineveh. David, despite his flaws, consistently turned his heart back to God. Abraham obeyed even when he didn’t understand, and through his faith, a great nation was born.

A Call to Obedience
When you feel God pulling on your heart strings, take a moment to pray. Ask Him to open your heart and mind to understand His plan. Trust that He is leading you for a purpose. As you walk in obedience, you will witness His faithfulness in ways you never imagined.

Obedience isn’t always comfortable. It often requires stepping out in faith, trusting God even when we don’t see the full picture. But a faith that has not been tested cannot be trusted. Your obedience is not just a personal act of faith—it is a testimony to those around you, both saved and not yet.

The Promise of Obedience
Deuteronomy 28:1-2 gives us this powerful promise:
“Now if you faithfully obey the Lord your God and are careful to follow all His commands, the Lord your God will put you far above all the nations of the earth. All these blessings will come and overtake you, because you obey the Lord your God.”

A Prayer to Declare
“Lord, I surrender my heart to you. May You continue to pull at my heartstrings, shaping my heart posture to align with Your will. Use my obedience as a testimony, that through my life, others may see Your goodness and grace. Amen.”
