Living into the Village That Rears a Child in Faith

Living into the Village That Rears a Child in Faith

Pastor Adrienne - October 21, 2024

Family Ministry is grateful for such wonderful support in our volunteers and congregation. Truly, everyone’s involvement makes all of the difference in what we are able to do. Our main purpose, as Family Ministry, is to help families fulfill their baptismal promises, and our role is also to help the congregation fulfill its promises to God and to families.

In today’s fast-paced world, the age-old proverb, "It takes a village to raise a child," holds more significance than ever, especially within the context of nurturing a child’s faith. The idea of community-centered child-rearing is not just a cultural relic; it’s a biblical model that has stood the test of time. As parents, church members, and volunteers, we are called to live into this truth—especially through family ministry.

When we think about family ministry, we often picture children’s programs, Sunday school, and youth groups. But at its core, family ministry is much more than a set of activities. It is the church body coming together to ensure that each child is surrounded by a support system that encourages spiritual growth, development, and faith formation.

Volunteers in family ministry play an essential role in this "village." Whether we are teaching, mentoring, or simply being present, we act as living examples of Christian love and service. The beauty of volunteering is that it’s not just an act of giving—it’s an act of participation in a larger, divine narrative. Each time we contribute, we affirm that no one family rears a child alone.

Scripture emphasizes the importance of community in the development of faith. We are reminded of the responsibility we have to pass on that faith:

"These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." Deuteronomy 6:6-7

This command isn’t just for parents; it’s for the entire community of believers. Volunteering in family ministry is a tangible way to take part in this command, ensuring that God’s Word is lived out in the daily lives of children. By surrounding children with diverse role models who demonstrate faith, we give them a more complete picture of the Christian path.

Becoming a partner with family ministry is an investment in the future of the church. Each hour spent with a child or teenager is a seed planted in fertile ground. You may never see the full impact of your involvement, but your presence and influence shape the spiritual journey of young minds.

Through family ministry, we are actively participating in the mission of raising up the next generation of disciples. We are helping build a foundation of faith, teaching children what it means to follow Christ, and showing them that their faith community will always be there to support them.

So step into the opportunity with confidence and heart. Together, we can create a village that rears children who know God, love His Word, and are prepared to carry His light into the world.
