Build a Bed
Pastor Scott Suskovic - January 20, 2025
In America, why are we still sleeping on the floor? Sadly, thousands of children do that every night in Mecklenburg County. With affordable housing becoming more and more scarce, families need to make hard decisions between transportation, food, utilities, rent, clothing and a bed. And for some, a bed to sleep on doesn’t make the cut.
There is a national organization called Sleep in Heavenly Peace (aka “Build a Bed”) that is trying to help families one bed at a time. They have contacts with lumber yards, mattress factories and linen makers. They supply the training and the building patterns. All they need are volunteers.
There is no chapter of Build a Bed in Mecklenburg County. We at Christ Lutheran want to change that. We have about a dozen people who are trying to organize a chapter, using one of the garages at Southland as their wood-working shop. Approximately four times a year, they will organize men’s groups, women’s groups, scouts, Bible studies, churches, youth group, and Rotary Clubs to come out and help cut, sand and assemble about 35 beds for children sleeping on the floor. The cost is under $300 per bed.
Our own quilting ministry will provide the comforters!
We are currently cleaning out the site and installing cabinets, building worktables and purchasing equipment to start this ministry. It is great to make use of our land at Southland.
Interested? This is a hands-on ministry that makes a huge impact on the lives of children sleeping in the corner of a room, curled up with a blanket. We can change that. If you want more information, please reach out to me and I’ll get you connected.
Peace,
Pastor Scott
