Stitch by Stitch, Out of Poverty
Untouchables- born into the lowest rank of India’s social system, face discrimination at almost every level of society: from access to education and medical facilities to restrictions on where they can live and what jobs they can have. Dalit women face the most oppression. They have a double strike against them in society’s view, 1) because they are born female, and 2) they are Dalit. These women toil in the fields for 12 hours to earn less than $2 US.
Tailoring schools supported by India Partners give young Dalit women the opportunity to learn a valuable skill and provide for their futures. These skills provide opportunities for a home-based business such as sewing enables a mother to care for her children while at home, earning a decent wage, and even save a little money by making the family’s own clothes. Your gift provides training and a sewing machine upon graduation, which is truly a life changing gift.
